A browser crop redraws the image through a canvas, so a JPEG is re-encoded and loses a small amount of quality even at quality 100. There is no lossless JPEG crop in a browser. Cropping removes pixels, it does not rescale them. The pixels you keep come out at their original scale, so a 1080 x 1080 crop of a 4000 x 3000 photo is genuinely 1080 x 1080. Saving a transparent PNG or WebP as JPG fills the transparent areas with white, because JPEG cannot store transparency. GIFs keep only their first frame. Re-encoding removes embedded metadata such as EXIF and GPS location, and bakes the camera's rotation tag into the pixels - smaller files and more privacy.

Same pixels, fewer of them. A crop keeps the pixels inside the box at their original scale, so a 2400 x 2400 square taken from a 4000 x 3000 photo is genuinely 2400 x 2400 and just as sharp. Nothing is stretched or resampled to fill the new frame.

Crop Image Online Without Uploading Anything

A crop is the bluntest edit in photography and the most common one. You keep a rectangle and throw the rest away. Cropping has been the first move in the darkroom and the first move in Lightroom for the same reason: framing decides what the picture is about, and almost every photo out of a phone has too much of something at the edges.

What makes browser cropping worth doing is where the file goes, which is nowhere. This tool reads your image with the FileReader API, draws the region you selected onto a canvas, and hands you back a blob. There is no upload, no queue, no processing server, and no copy of your file sitting in someone's temporary folder for thirty days. Load the page, turn off your Wi-Fi, and the tool still crops.

That matters more in India than the average tool page admits. The files people crop most often are Aadhaar scans, PAN cards, signed cheques, marksheets and passport photographs for a government portal. The second thing worth saying plainly is what a crop does to quality, because most tools stay quiet about it. Cropping itself does not soften anything. The pixels you keep are the pixels you had. Technical Notes And Honest Limits

The crop is performed by drawing your decoded image onto a canvas through a single transform matrix and then calling toBlob. The relevant browser behaviour is documented on MDN's reference for CanvasRenderingContext2D.drawImage, which is also where the source rectangle arguments that make cropping possible are specified. Because everything goes through the canvas, three consequences follow, and none of them are optional: a JPEG is always re-encoded and always loses a little, embedded metadata such as EXIF and GPS coordinates does not survive the redraw, and a rotated crop is baked into the pixels rather than stored as a tag.

Those first two are usually good news. Losing GPS coordinates before you send a photo to a stranger is a privacy win, and the file gets smaller. The third is worth knowing about only if you were relying on the camera's rotation flag, which this tool deliberately reads once and applies once, so portrait phone photos do not arrive sideways.

PNG and WebP output keep transparency exactly as it was. JPG cannot store an alpha channel at all, so the canvas is filled with white before the image is drawn and every transparent pixel becomes white.
